This piece deconstructs a poem by Ber Horvitz called 'Der Himmel' which was written during the Holocaust. The powerful text presents a distorted reality of "the heavens".
This is represented in the music by processing voice through a modular synthesiser. Der Himmel is an extension of a piece made for Kindertransport but this work takes the vocal distortion and development further than in the piece made by the play. "These skies are leaden, heavy, gray ... I long for a pair of deep blue eyes. The birds have fled far overseas; tomorrow I’ll migrate too, I said ..." |
