I have really enjoyed scoring Simon Stephens' Short Film LOVE which has been commissioned by the RWCMD. I feel privileged that despite COVID-19 I have still had the chance to be involved with socially distant projects, such as this one. It was exciting to create an urban electronic score for the film and work alongside such a talented cast and crew. RWCMD held an internal premiere of the film (alongside RADIANCE by Moira Buffini and DOVE by Simon Longman) in the Richard Burton Theatre. It was lovely to see all the hard work of the actors and creative team come together. RWCMD included a write up of the RWCMD FILM FEST in their blog post which features one of my tweets about being involved.

Excited to begin my third year at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and start creating some new music. I have some great projects in the pipeline and despite COVID-19 the college has created a 'blended' learning approach which means we still have access to the facilities. It's going to be an unusual term but and exciting one nonetheless...
Was great to get a mention in the RWCMD 'college is back' blog post. I have spent the summer making a new educational resource - The Field Recording Project. I've enjoyed making recordings in a variety of different locations. Starting with my local area, when we were in lockdown, and later making lots in rural Wales on my holiday. The resource is free for anyone to explore and contribute to. It focuses in on the environment, education, supporting creatives and mindfulness/wellbeing - all areas I am passionate about! You can check out the resource here.
I enjoyed working with singers at the RWCMD to re create my art on the hill installation in the RWCMD Foyer, for the composers soundbar concert. I adapted the work for the space and even made use of the balcony! I am very grateful to Sophie Williams, Ethnie Foulkes, Niamh O'Donnell and Rosa Sparks for helping create this piece.
Re-Sounding Turmoil - In collaboration with Opera Sonic. It was a fantastic experience to create my installation The Voice Of The People for the Art on the Hill festival. The show "Re- sounding Turmoil" presented works of six composers from RWCMD. My piece combined live vocals with a soundscape and projections. All of the pieces were based around the theme of the 1839 Chartist rebellion which took place at the Westgate hotel, it was very powerful to be able to use the ballroom of the hotel as the installation site. This project was in collaboration with Opera Sonic.
I have had a busy few weeks finishing my orchestral score. Mendeleev is a piece based on the discoveries of the periodic table of elements made by Russian Scientist Dmitri Mendeleev. Mendeleev made his discoveries through a dream and the piece aims to evoke his dream state. Different elemental themes are presented throughout the work and I have used the periodic table of elements as a tool to assist me whilst creating these. It has been a great experience to compose my first orchestral work. It was great to be involved in a workshop with a string trio from London Sinfonietta. I composed a short work "Moonlight in the Glade', based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, to be played by the trio. It was a very valuable opportunity to gain feedback on my piece from fantastic professional instrumentalists. This post also features the new illustration I made for the cover of this score!
It was a fantastic experience to collaborate with the RWCMD designers. The paper sculptures exhibition is an annual event at the college and this year the theme was "Hares". My team were given the brief of "Chasing, Chased, Hunted." I created an electronic soundscape inspired by this brief, I was also inspired by the 'Hare and the Tortoise' fable. The Soundscape I created formed a part of the installation. This was a high octane project, we had just a 1 week to produce the finished work! It has been wonderful to score the Short Film 'Overs' for BBC2 Wales as part of 'its my shout' 2019. I attended the premiere and awards event at St David's Hall over the weekend. It was a really enjoyable evening and I was grateful to have received a nomination for the 'Best Composer' award. 'It's my shout' is an amazing scheme. You can catch Overs on BBC 2 Wales - Thursday 12th September at 11.15pm
I have composed a new piece called "Opposing forces" for the Balance festival at RWCMD.
It was great to collaborate with the RWCMD piano department. |
